Abstract

Most first-time patellar dislocation patients can be managed conservatively. Surgical treatment is suggested primarily in cases of relevant concomitant injuries, like osteochondral fractures, and predisposing factors for recurrence. Simple radiographs and CT are crucial to diagnosing bony risk factors for patellar dislocation, such as trochlear dysplasia, en-hanced tibial tubercle-trochlear groove (TT-TG) distance, and patellar alta. MRI offers information on cartilage status and the medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) injury type for treatment planning. MPFL reconstruction can be an effective treatment option for patients with a specific situation (ex. osteochondral fracture, anatomical predisposing factors).
